12.01.13 ~ First Sunday of Advent

Is 2:4

… They will melt down their swords into plough-shares, their spears into pruning-hooks, nation levying war against nation and training itself for battle no longer.

Rom 13:11 – 14

… already it is high time for us to awake out of our sleep; our salvation is closer to us now than when we first learned to believe. The night is far on its course; day draws near. Let us abandon the ways of darkness, and put on the armour of light. Let us pass our time honourably, as by the light of day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in lust and wantonness, not in quarrels and rivalries. Rather, arm yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ…

Mt 24:38 – 39, 43 – 44

in those days before the flood, they went on eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the time when Noe entered the ark, and they were taken unawares, when the flood came and drowned them all; so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man… if the master of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch, and not allowed his house to be broken open. And you too must stand ready; the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him.

In Conversation with God:

Everybody knows, even those of us who have lived most unadventurously… what it is to plod on for miles, it seems, eagerly straining your eyes towards the lights that, somehow, mean home. How difficult it is… to judge distances! So it was… with the Hebrew prophets, as they looked forward to the redemption of their people. They could not have told you… when it was the deliverance would come. They only knew that, some time… the light that only showed, now, like a will-o’-the-wisp on the horizon would broaden out, at last, into the perfect day…

If we are aware that our sight is clouded.. it is time to rid ourselves of whatever impairs our vision… It is the moment to take note of the things that separate us from Him, to loosen their hold and cast them from us…

… let us look down into our souls in depth. There we will find the real enemies that sustain their unremitting warfare to keep us away from Him. There, in one form or another, are… the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life…

… our hearts are darkened by gluttony and drunkenness and the cares of this life… the well-armed solider… does not allow himself to be taken by surprise. This adversary tries to wreak havoc in whatever way he can; and since he does not devise his tactics without attention to detail, neither should we.

For no man doth well against his will, even if that which he doth be well…

… wait for the Lord whose day is near…
… Jesus, hope of the world… light in our darkness… here we await you, O Master Divine, here we receive you in bread and in wine… shepherd your people in love… come, Promised Peace, come and be Lord of our hearts… shatter the darkness of death… come, Heart’s Desire, come, Saving Love, banish our doubt and our fear…
