3.27.13 ~ Wednesday of Holy Week

From the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia:

Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicare…

Then I saw standing in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures and the elders, a Lamb that seemed to have been slain… Revelation 5:6

Christ, the fulfillment of all prefigurements and promises of the old covenant, reveals Himself as the true Paschal Lamb whose blood washes away our sins and establishes a new and everlasting covenant…

The practice of the evangelical counsels contains a deep reflection of this paschal duality: the inevitable destruction of what in each of us is sin and its inheritance, and the possibility of being reborn each day  to a more profound good hidden in the human soul…

May we never fear giving everything to find our Lord and our Friend who is waiting for us…

Today there is a great silence over the earth, a great silence, and stillness, a great silence because the King sleeps; the earth was in terror and was still, because God slept in the flesh and raised up those who were sleeping from the ages. God has died in the flesh, and the underworld has trembled.

Truly he goes to seek out our first parent like a lost sheep; he wishes to visit those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He goes to free the prisoner Adam and his fellow-prisoner Eve from their pains, he who is God, and Adam’s son...

Look at the spittle on my face, which I received because of you, in order to restore you to that first divine inbreathing at creation. See the blows on my cheeks, which I accepted in order to refashion your distorted form to my own image.

See the scourging of my back, which I accepted in order to disperse the load of your sins which was laid upon your back. See my hands nailed to the tree for a good purpose, for you, who stretched out your hand to the tree for an evil one.

I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side, for you, who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side healed the pain of your side; my sleep will release you from your sleep in Hades; my sword has checked the sword which was turned against you.

Mary Vitamin:

The lance which opened His side passed through the soul of the Blessed Virgin, which could never leave her Son’s heart.

In Conversation with God:

I have trodden the wine press alone…

A recently-arrived spectator to the scene would see three men, each laden with a cros, walking towards death. But only one is the Saviour of the world. Only one of the crosses is the redeeming Cross.

Today, too, the cross can be carried in different ways. There is the cross carried furiously or sullenly, in a rage; man writhes and squirms, filled with hate, or at least, with a deep and burning resentment. It is a cross without meaning and without any explanation, useless… It is the cross of those in this world who seek comfort and… will put up with neither suffering nor setbacks, for they have no wish to understand the supernatural meaning of pain…

Saintly people have discovered that sorrow, suffering and contradictions cease to be merely negative…

I went to those who were not looking for me; I was found by those who sought me not…

The Rhythm of Life:

It was not bad things that had led me to this lonely place of brokenness – but rather good things. Good opportunities were destroying me… I realized that too many good opportunities can become a dangerous situation. Even when they are opportunities to do good. Especially when they are opportunities to do good…

… just because something is good, doesn’t mean that it is good for you, or right for you.

ToB #73 ~ Virginity or Celibacy for the Sake of the Kingdom

The question of continence for the kingdom of heaven is not set in opposition to marriage, nor is it based on a negative judgment in regard to its importance… Those who in life choose continence for the kingdom of heaven do so, not because it is inexpedient to marry or because of a supposed negative value of marriage, but in view of the particular value connected with this choice…

The eschatological absence of marriage will be a state, that is, the proper and fundamental mode of existence of human beings, men and women, in their glorified bodies. Continence for the kingdom of heaven, as the fruit of a charismatic choice, is an exception in respect to the other stage, namely, that state in which man “from the beginning” became and remains a participant during the course of his whole earthly existence…

  • expedient – convenient and practical, although possibly improper or immoral
