Blind Taste

the mouthful is round

like a ball of chocolate

but not melting

more like the smoothness

of a hard caramel

the burn is like pepper

in its sensation of friction

of scratchiness

of small pricks like a pincushion

yet subtle

far from unpleasant

in the back of one’s tongue and throat

of a thinness like water

not so filling as whole milk

buttery in the manner of chardonnay

a see-through aspect like pinot noir; that would be the tea

the coffee lost in the caramel

indistinguishable as coffee

but clearly tasting brown

and yet closer to golden

the foam collecting at the bottom

of the cup

more ticklish than the head on a beer

venti chai

soy latte.
