Grafted Watermelons Contain Higher Pesticide Levels

Grafting is practiced with the intention of aiding less disease-resistant plants by re-attaching them to rootstock of plants with a higher resistance to disease. Unfortunately, pollutants which have accumulated in the soil also have the potential to accumulate in rootstock, whereby pollutants can be transferred via grafting. Furthermore, if both the rootstock and the grafted item have been exposed to pesticides separately, unusually high levels of accumulated pollutants result, as they are combined. While the article states that the pesticide levels are not a “likely” food safety concern, caution is still advised.
